The Board of Directors, Estonian House in Toronto: New roof for the Estonian House

The Estonian House Board would like to announce that it is undertaking a major project to repair the roof of the grand hall and foyer. The roof has been deteriorating for several years and has leaked in several places last winter, necessitating stopgap measures and negatively impacting the rentability and attractiveness of the grand hall.

Due to the importance of proceeding with the repairs expeditiously, the Estonian House will rely on an increase in its line of credit, along with funding from a City of Toronto grant, to fund the repairs. The repairs are expected to cost in the range of $150,000. Over the last couple of months, the Board has vetted three quotes, and has chosen a vendor who will undertake the work immediately.

The roof repairs are needed to fix an immediate and pressing problem, as it is important that our community home is functional and operational for as long as it is expected to serve the community. The roof project does not affect the long-term viability of the House in a meaningful way. The backlog of near- and medium-term building needs remains large. The Board remains committed to following the shareholder mandate from April 2017 for the Estonian Centre and will continue to work hard toward a long-term sustainable home for the community.

Work will be taking place over the next two months and is expected to take approximately six weeks in total. The winning bidder from a competitive solicitation of three bidders will be supervised by the Estonian House maintenance manager daily. During this time there will be reduced use of the grand hall and the parking lot, part of which will be used for staging. We have received assurances that the work can proceed regardless of time of year and within budget.
