2013 OVA Provincial & Eastern Canadian Volleyball Championships

The 2013 Provincial volleyball championships in Waterloo provided 3 weekends of exciting competition involving, among others, a number from our Jõekääru Kalev volleyball camp family. The following are the majority of our camp participants' results from those championships:

April 12-14

15U Boys Division 1:
Tomas Sõrra ( Leaside Thunder): Friday & Saturday yielded 3 wins, 3 losses in match competition. Won their first playoff match Sunday, but were eliminated (0:2) in quarterfinals by Pakmen, the eventual gold medalists .

15U Girls Division 1:
Alexa Thompson (Storm Tsumani): Tsunami were unbeaten through first two days of competition, winning all 6 matches. Additionally, won their first playoff match Sunday (2:1), but succumbed in the quarterfinals, 1:2, to eventual gold medalists, Markham Stingers.

15U Girls Division 2:
Katrine Eistrat (Interclub Black Ice): A similar path was taken by Interclub who went unbeaten Friday & Saturday winning all 6 matches as well as their 1st playoff match Sunday,( 2:0). They ultimately tasted defeat in the quarterfinals to Etobicoke Titans, (1:2).

15U Girls Division 3:
Helena Stahl (Interclub Force): Force completed the first two days of competition with 5 wins, 1 loss leading into Sunday's playoff rounds. Victorious in a tough quarterfinal match vs. London VC (2:1), Force lost (0:2) vs Georgetown Impact in their semifinal and then fell short to Durham Attack Firestorm in the bronze medal match (0:2), thus having to settle for 4th place.

Kersti Sõrra 16U girls (DRVC): The National 15U champions last season, DRVC had to fight hard to attain a 6-0 record through the first two days of competition. Sunday's playoffs saw them dispatch Interclub Ice (2:0) and Hamilton Mountain VC (2:0) before falling to Forest City Green (0:2) in the semifinal. The bronze medal match vs Aurora Storm Bolts provided no consolation as DRVC lost a hard match (1:2) and 4th place.

April 19-21

14U Girls Division 1
Katrine Eistrat (Interclub Black Ice) : Preliminary two days of match competition yielded 3 wins, 3 losses dropping Interclub to Tier 2 for Sunday's playoff rounds. Proving the old adage, “through adversity we grow stronger”, Interclub swept all 4 Sunday matches en route to the Gold Medal, defeating Defensa (2:0) in the final.

14U Girls Division 3
Alex Bartmann (Uxbridge Cosmos) Preliminary two days, Cosmos collected 4 wins, 2 losses relegating the team to Tier 2 for Sunday's matches. The team showed true character in winning all 4 Sunday matches and the Tier 3 Gold Medal, defeating Guelph Grizzlies (2:0) in the final.

16U Boys Division 1
Jonathan Wismer (Niagara Rapids) : Great expectations after sweeping their 6 matches through the first two days , Sunday's playoffs were shortlived, as Niagara bowed out to Durham Attack Black (0:2) in the quarterfinals.

Kenni Dobson (Burlington Blaze): Preliminary rounds weren't kind to Burlington as 2 wins, 5 losses relegated the team to Tier 3 for Sunday's playoffs. Re-energized, they won all three playoff matches, ultimately defeating Maverick Longhorns( 2:1) for the Tier 3 Gold Medal.

17U Boys Division 1
Hendrik Jakobson (Evolution): Evolution accumulated 4 wins, 2 losses over the first two days of competition, but were eliminated (1:2) in the quarterfinals by the number 1 seed Guelph Grizzlies.

April 26-28

13U Girls Division 2
Breanna Heron – Suits (Durham Attack Silver Hawks) : The Silver Hawks completed the preliminary round with 2 wins, 1 loss, but were eliminated Sunday in the round of 16 playoff by Niagara Rapids Red (0:2).

13U Girls Division 1
Kristi Wismer – Niagara Rapids Blue: Kristi, in her first experience as a coach, saw Niagara successfully earn the bronze medal for Division 1.

17U Girls Division 1
Alexandra Heron-Suits (Durham Attack Black): Preliminary play produced 4 wins, 2 losses leading in Sunday' playoffs. Won their round of 16 match Sunday before succumbing in the quarterfinals (0:2) to Forest City Green, the eventual Gold medalists.

18U Girls Division 2
Teija Jõgi (Markham Stingers): Preliminary rounds record of 1 win, 5 losses relegated the team to Tier 2 Playoffs, winning their quarterfinal, losing in the semi final and recovering to defeat Akwesasne Soaring Eagles (2:1) to win the Division 2 Tier 2 Bronze medal.

Brielle Migur girls (Interclub): Preliminary rounds yielded 3 wins, 3 losses meaning relegation to Tier 2 Playoffs, where they lost (0:2) to Markham Stingers (Teija Jõgi's team).

18U Boys Division 1
Hendrik Jakobson (Evolution) : With a record of 1 win, 5 losses in preliminary rounds, Evolution was relegated to Tier 2 for Sunday's playoffs. There, they suffered an early exit versus Kingston Pegasus, losing (0:2).

Eastern Canadian Volleyball Championships – Sherbrooke, Quebec – May 3 – 5.

Fabulous achievements were also attained at the Eastern Canadians! Jonathan Wismer and his Niagara Rapids teammates won Silver in 16U Boys competition , Kersti Sõrra and DRVC won the Bronze for 16U Girls and Alexa Thompson with Aurora Tsunami earned the SILVER in 15U Girls, Tier 2 competition.

The Jõekääru Kalev Volleyball family is extremely proud of all of our young athletes and would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you parents for your ongoing support of your children's athletic aspirations. Looking forward to seeing everyone up at volleyball camp again this August.
