The program features a range of classical and contemporary pieces, including a World Premiere by Estonian-Canadian Riho Maimets. The concert opens with Mozart’s Symphony No 31, also known as the “Paris” Symphony. This piece was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1778, during his stay in Paris, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest symphonies of the Classical era.
Next on the program is a premiere by Riho Maimets with Double Concerto for Flute, Harp and Orchestra. Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony principal harpist, Lori Gemmel and Kaili Maimets, flute will perform as soloists. Kaili describes this piece as “First of its kind with bold gestures and colours” and takes us on a sonic journey that you may not expect from a concerto for flute and harp. This piece is a commission in honour of the memory of her godfather, Tiit Koplimägi, who was a great supporter of her music education and career. Maimets is in demand as an orchestral performer, chamber musician, and soloist. She regularly performs with the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada (NACO) where she was Acting Second Flute and Piccolo from 2017 to 2020. She held the Second Flute & Piccolo position of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony from 2016–2018, and prior to that was Principal Flute of London Symphonia (formerly Orchestra London) for four seasons.
Lastly, after intermission, the orchestra returns to the stage for Richard Strauss’ Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Composed in 1915, it is a suite of incidental music, originally composed to accompany a play of the same name by the French playwright Molière. The play itself is a comedy that satirizes the aspirations of the French middle class, and Strauss’ music was composed to underscore and enhance the humor of the play. Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme is widely regarded as one of Strauss’ most charming and delightful works.
Don’t miss this special event featuring talented artists from our own Estonian-Canadian community. Audiences will be treated to a stunning display of musicianship and artistry. The Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony is proving once again why they are considered one of Canada’s finest orchestras, delivering a concert that is to be both elegant and innovative.
Two performances will take place at Centre In The Square, Kitchener. Saturday April 22 at 8pm and Sunday April 23 at 2:30pm.
