Gallery: photographing hockey

In the winter, when not photographing Estonian community events, I keep the camera (silently) clicking at Mississauga Steelheads hockey games.

The Steelheads play in the Ontario Hockey League, where players aged 17-20 years old play with passion. Some of their  journeys will reach the National Hockey League.

With a media pass, I photograph from centre ice just below the TV cameras. Using a telephoto lens, I have an unobstructed view of both goalmouths, as well as the boards on the far side of the rink.

A close call
A close call

Capturing images of the puck entering the net is always an aspiration, but close calls and the occasional fight also bring the game to life. I am fascinated by photos of ice-spray because they capture the speed of the sport and remind us that it is cold down there.
