Meals on Heels

A cluster of Estonians lived near High Park in West Toronto. A few are still there. We met frequently for dinner and often had lunch on our balcony. New Year’s, Easter, American Thanksgiving, and Christmas became a tradition.

As the group aged, most no longer wanted to prepare Esto-style meals for one, were unhappy with ‘Meals on Wheels’ deliveries of frozen food and asked if my husband Rein would help especially if they were entertaining others. Rein was amused. They wanted him to set up a business, they would place orders which Rein would deliver. Rein did prepare meals and delivered them, but never charged anyone – we gave people gift certificates for birthdays and holidays – rosolje for 8, sauerkraut soup, pea and lettuce soup, borscht, kilu võileivad (anchovy sandwiches) and duck liver pate (one lady said it was like dessert for her).

Most of the elderly group have died and the EESTI KOKK left us in April 2019.
