While tennis overshadows badminton in terms of international sports coverage and prize winnings, across Asia and Europe, badminton is highly competitive and is considered by some to be one of the most popular sports in the world. It draws in hundreds of millions of players at all levels for its tests of endurance, blazing fast returns, and — when it’s played in the form of doubles — the coordinated, dance-like movements around the court.
Players are doing their best to rack up world and European ranking points in the lead-up to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Estonia is the first stop of the 2024 European circuit. And this January marked 20 years of hosting the YONEX Estonian International. Based at Kalev Sports Hall in Tallinn, governing body Badminton Europe notes that the tournament is a tense one this time around. Players are doing their best to rack up world and European ranking points in the lead-up to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Things got started on the morning of Thursday January 11th with qualification rounds. The next day was the main round kickoff. Saturday morning saw the arrival of the quarterfinals and the semifinals in the afternoon. To conclude, the finals took place on the morning of Sunday January 14th.
