Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already all around us. However, generative AI, which recently became available to everyone when ChatGPT was released, has a profound impact on education. Countries, schools, and educators have different opinions on how this change should be approached. Do we prohibit using AI in teaching and learning processes? Do we allow it? Do we incorporate it? Or do we even try to learn how to make it? And how much should we actually know about it?
I recently heard a talk by the Estonian historian David Vseviov where he discussed the history of technology. From time immemorial, technological advances have been pursued to free people from hard and tedious labour. According to him, AI seems like reaching the ultimate goal—now humans can be freed from even thinking by themselves!
