The Laas Leivat Award is established in honor of Laas Leivat, a revered figure in the Estonian – Canadian community. Laas Leivat's commitment to freedom, democracy, and the Estonian cause has left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. In addition to political activism, Laas was a distinguished journalist who used his platform to preserve and further and Estonian culture and community.
The EKN Awards Committee receives and reviews all nomination submissions and forwards recommendations to the EKN Board of Directors for final approval. Recipients are announced annually on or before February 24th, Estonia’s Independence Day.
GUIDELINES FOR NOMINATING A CANDIDATE:
- Candidate must be 16 – 35 years old as of January 1, 2025.
- Candidate must have been active in the Estonian – Canadian community during the past year.
- Candidate has made a positive contribution to the promotion and preservation of the Estonian- Canadian community through youth work, culture, politics, journalism, leadership.
- Contributions have been voluntary in nature.
- The total Award amount is $1500.00
- The Award is donated once a year to a maximum of three individuals.
- The Award will not be given to the same individual more than once.
HOW TO SUBMIT A NOMINATION:

- The name of the candidate, their contact information, birth date and address
- A statement of nomination summarizing the nominee’s contributions to furthering Estonian – Canadian community interests as outlined above.
