It never fails to make me laugh, and provoke thought at that. What is the reason they call those breakfasts “continental?” Even if they added croissants and coffee, it would be a stretch to say it’s inspired by continental Europe, right? But as Reader’s Digest clarifies, “the defining characteristic of a continental breakfast is that every food item can be easily taken to go, whether you’re headed to an event, business meeting or the first stop on your vacation itinerary.” It’s usually quite simple therefore.
The continental label is actually a fair association from the hospitality industry then. French people might have a croissant and some coffee for breakfast. In Italy, you see the same, a cornetto, sometimes filled with Nutella and served alongside café macchiato or a glass of blood orange juice. A fine breakfast appetizer, but you’ll be hungry by ten o’clock! If you’re really pinched for time or just living on the edge, breakfast will consist of a shot of espresso, a cigarette, and a cookie before you hop on your Vespa to work. You’ve got other priorities at that point.
