Teach Your Kids Estonian With These Christmas-themed Videos

Winter is a time of retreat, rest, and re-connection. As the weather gets colder, traditions move indoors. Friends and family share warm meals and houses are decorated with bows and mistletoe. Children come home for winter break to spend time with loved ones, with no homework, tests, or assignments to worry about.

This makes it an ideal moment to read stories together, create new memories, and even introduce a bit of Estonian.

One great resource is the YouTube channel “LÄLÄ — õppevideod lihtsas eesti keeles.” Featuring short, interactive videos, games, and lessons, the channel specializes in teaching young children the basics of the Estonian language. The videos are entirely in Estonian, but if your child is still learning, you can easily watch along and explain the English equivalents as you go.

Below are some fun Christmas-themed videos to explore with your kids.

  1. TOAD ja MÖÖBEL | MÄNG | ÕPIME EESTI KEELT | Päkapikk, jõulud.

This four-and-a-half minute household vocabulary game follows an elf (päkapikk) as he searches for stockings to fill with gifts. The video ends with a short quiz to help reinforce new words.

  1. JÕULUD | ÕPIME EESTI KEELT | Suur, väike, keskmine | Väikelastele

This video introduces Christmas-themed vocabulary in just under five minutes. It supports word association by showing each object on screen while the word is pronounced slowly and clearly. A final review section also helps viewers reinforce what they learned.
