In this first video, we meet author Kaili (Lupp) Colford and her children, who show how Eesti Elu / Estonian Life can enrich a family’s life across generations.
Kaili begins by sharing her family’s story, tracing the steps that brought them to Canada following the tumultuous flight of her grandparents from Estonia.
“I love that my parents kept so many of them!… I think there’s something nice about holding a physical paper and being able to pass it on to your kids and put it in a binder and it’s just something that’s frozen in time.”
But the focal point is the family’s material connection to their heritage through Kaili’s extensive, treasured collection of Eesti Elu copies. In each paper, she shows us memories of the countless Estonian activities and events she participated in growing up, birth announcements, and more. Showing how the paper is a cornerstone of their family memories and Estonian roots, Colford says, “I love that my parents kept so many of them!… I think there’s something nice about holding a physical paper and being able to pass it on to your kids and put it in a binder and it’s just something that’s frozen in time.”
Kaili shares the personal and a funny story of her father filming classmates at a 1994 Estonian School aktus (assembly) when she was nine. She shares how she and her sister, Kaarin Lupp, maintain their connection to their heritage by creating Estonian picture books together, and also contributing columns.
So it’s safe to say, the Colford family is an Eesti Elu family. Become one yourself and nurture your connection to Estonian culture, heritage and language by subscribing today.
