Happy Estonians from a Century Ago Star in This New Calendar

How about a car ride with Paul Janison in 1912 New York? Or asado (barbeque) with Alfonso Luik in 1935 Argentina? Maybe even putting on a St. Martin’s Day carnival for kids, or taking a little trip to the Atlantic coast? These represent just some of the evocative scenes from a hundred years ago, which have been expertly captured by photographers of the time.

Now they are showcased in a new calendar published by a nonprofit association, the Estonian Diaspora Academy.

Sometimes it can seem like the phenomenon of Estonians living abroad is a new thing. However, there is a long history behind it. In fact, in the 1920s and 1930s, emigration was similar to what it is nowadays. Estonia was independent, people were free to move, and some decided to leave in search of adventure, career opportunities, or love, just like they do now. Similarly to how it is nowadays, people from those times also found ways to show up for each other, organize events, dance, and feel merry, despite all sorts of obstacles that stemmed from being in a new land far from home.

To let the images make an impact, the calendar has a large A3 format and is printed on thick paper. It also boasts some unique features in its design. For example, instead of the usual red colour marking holidays, this calendar uses a very Estonian blue hue. There are some nods to the Estonian diaspora as well, such as August 23rd being marked, for Black Ribbon Day.

It is good to remind ourselves that we can find our footing wherever we go, and that together we are stronger.

All of the historical photographs in question have been sourced from the collections of the Estonian Archives in the U.S., Inc and the National Archives of Estonia. Wherever possible, the names of people in the photographs were also added to the captions to enable the discovery of long-lost relatives. The calendar was born out of a hope that seeing happy, smiling Estonians all year round would remind us that life is beautiful despite the challenges we all inevitably face. It is good to remind ourselves that we can find our footing wherever we go, and that together we are stronger.

The calendar is in Estonian and can be purchased from the Apollo online bookshop, which offers shipping options. It is also available at several museum stores in Tallinn, as well as at the Psühhoteek record store in Tartu. For special pricing of bulk orders, inquiries can be sent to the Estonian Diaspora Academy (Eesti Diasporaa Akadeemia) Facebook page. All proceeds from calendar sales will go towards producing the next documentary film in the series Estonia Is in the Eye of the Beholder.
