The lens of Estonian media continues to be adjusted, looking further into the diaspora and connections with other nations. In an ongoing effort to showcase voices that bridge the gap between Estonia and the wider world, we’ve recently spent time exploring a digital project that has become a repository of human stories. Stories that might otherwise go untold. It’s a podcast titled Found in Estonia.
Created by Tiina Pärtel, the show seeks to humanize the “anonymous foreigner” stereotypes that can sometimes persist in a small, historically homogenous society.
By starting deep and personal conversations with international guests who’ve chosen to make Estonia their home, Pärtel created a platform for residents of Estonia to talk about their triumphs, cultural shocks, and astute (at times humorous) observations about Estonian life.
Her goal was to make a more culturally open Estonia by showcasing the multitude of people who’ve contributed to the country’s modern form. And perhaps the show can make the world more open to Estonia and its culture as well.
