Finding Home in Stratford as an Estonian, and How You Can Enjoy It Best as a Visitor

Life in Stratford, Ontario is very good. I’ve been enjoying my retirement here for the past eight years. I retired from teaching twenty years ago. Before moving, my wife (who is also retired) and I lived in Long Branch, South Etobicoke, for twenty-one years. Along with our daughter, we moved to Stratford because my wife has connections to southwestern Ontario from when she was growing up.

In the early history of the Stratford Festival, the amphitheatre in which plays were performed—constructed in parkland next to the historic Stratford Normal School—was covered by a theatrical tent. In 1957, a permanent roof, designed by Toronto architect Robert Fairfield, was installed.

Transition to a smaller city has worked out well for us. We’ve maintained our connection to Toronto, travelling there quite frequently to stay in touch with old friends and relatives. At the same time, we’ve made lots of friends in Stratford.
