First combined Sunday service of the St. John’s Estonian and St. Michael’s Finnish congregations in Montreal

On October 4, 2015, the St. Michal's Finnish and St. John's Estonian communities held their first common service at the St. John's Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Montreal. There was a large turnout as over 50 parishioners joined together with Rev'd Dr. Matthew Anderson, who presided the combined congregational Sunday service that including a communion and a baptism with family and friends.

This service marked a coming together of two congregations that was several years in the making. This past summer the Finnish congregation made the official move to the Estonian church premises. Both congregations worked together for a smooth transition that was supported by Rev'd Dr. Matthew Anderson of the St. Michael's Finnish church and now pastor for both congregations.

Reverend Anderson's sermon spoke to giving thanks in a world where we are not sure where our next meal comes from and explored the concept of being thankful on several levels. The service included the communion offered to both congregations, and the service was followed by a baptism. The service was conducted in three languages including Estonian, Finnish and English. The service was also accompanied by the choral voices of the St. Michael's Finnish Church Choir with piano and by talented organist Kara-Lis Coverdale.

Following the service the congregations enjoyed a “Meet and Greet” as people mingled together. Pirkko Monkare and Piret Koppel greeted the congregation on behalf of the Finnish and Estonian congregations. Andres Tõke served a light lunch with Estonian and Finnish foods, and everyone had a relaxing time.
