On Thursday September 15, the first match at Centre Court featured Toronto's Estonian-Canadian Kristina Väljas and her partner, Jamie Broder, against a Spanish team.

The hard-fought match went to three sets, with the Canadians winning the first set 21-19 but losing the next two, 13-21 and 14-16. The photo-gallery focuses on Kristina. Some of the early photos were taken during the warm-up time.

Despite losing two matches, Kristina and Jamie still have a chance to advance, via the Round of 16 competition that will be held on Friday for all the teams that did not win their pool. However, that challenge will be daunting, as even the Rio Olympic champions from Germany, Ludwig and Walkenhorst, did not win their pool and will compete in the Round of 16.
