An advance literary ‘heads up’ from Hilary Bird

For those who don't know yet, I am in Boston , Mass, USA for the launch this week of my book, "An introduction to Estonian literature" at the convention of the American Association of Slavonic, Eastern European and Eurasian Srudies (ASEEES).

My publisher is Slavica Publishers of Indiana University based at Bloomington, USA, a distinguished publisher from a wll respected university. I am proud to be associated with both Slavica and my other supporters all over the world have been pillars of strength during the 15 years that I took to write the book. The going has not always been easy. I have supported myself on my pension, have had no backing or funding from official Estonia and do not expect to make a fortune from royalties. My book is, essentially, a labour of love

The 500 page "Introduction" is an academic publication that has been peer reviewed by Indiana and London Universities. It has also been checked out by scholars of Tartu University. Having said that, I was, for a long while, never sure who would publish the book (if anyone!) and so it is written in a style accesible to everyone.

The lovely cover in the Estonian national colours – blue, black and white – was designed by my cousin, Innar Jyriska. It shows a drawing of a word tree – the tree is made up of some of the 50-odd authors I have translated. The sky is blue, the tree is black and I am the little bird singing its socks off at the tip of a branch. There are endorsements from Estonia, Canada and the UK.

To say that I am thrilled is an understatement! But , for now, I have two days of relaxation. I am staying at a very cosy, comfortable, cheap, cheerful and centraly located B&B near the waterfront and, having acquired some freebie tourist maps, am off for a limp (leg is still iffy) around.

fb chums should follow me on fb but there will also be pictures for Droppings folk!

Cheers from Boston Bird!
