Aarne Tork Speech for Vancouver Ukraine Rally

Feb 22, 2026 – Dyakaju…It is my honor and privilege to speak to you on behalf of the Vancouver Estonian Community and Estonians worldwide in this great nation of Canada, where we have the freedom to safely gather together and join with our Ukrainian friends and family to show our support and love.

Aarne Tork and Liisa Suurkask Hein at Vancouver Ukraine rally.

While I am representing Estonians today, I believe I am also speaking for all nations, like Canada, like our fellow Baltic states, Latvia and Lithuania that support Ukraine and the Principles that Ukrainians continue to fight for day after day at a horrific cost: the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, human rights, democracy, the right for self determination; principles that the terrorist state of Russia clearly does not believe in and violates as a matter of course as it continues to pursue its unchanging objective, of not PEACE, but – and make no mistake about this – its ultimate goal of wiping out the Ukrainian nation, people, identity and language, as it has tried to do not since 2022 or 2014, but for over close to 400 years. The Ukrainians’ remarkable courage and resiliency has not allowed this to happen, and it will not happen, but Ukraine needs our support and we must help them to ensure victory.

For Estonians Feb. 24th has now become a day of very conflicting emotions – Feb. 24 has traditionally been a day of joy and celebration for Estonians as it is our Independence Day from Russian rule and aggression, 108 years ago. But now, as all of you here do, we also feel profound anger, rage and sadness as we mark the awful 4th anniversary of the full-scale illegal, immoral, evil, inhumane and insane invasion by Putin and the Russian Army. A war that has now lasted longer than the First World War and is the largest and deadliest war in Europe since World War II.
