Belarusian Canadian Alliance calls on Canada to formally derecognize the illegitimate regime of Alexander Lukashenka

Belarusian Canadian Alliance calls on Canada to formally derecognize the illegitimate regime of Alexander Lukashenka as it continues to demonstrate an apparent disregard for the interests of the Belarusian people and puts Belarus’s sovereignty in grave jeopardy.

Despite all the regime’s assurances, by February 20, Russian troops were not withdrawn from Belarus. By letting Putin use the territory of Belarus as a foothold for a potential invasion into Ukraine, Lukashenka is trying to preserve his illegitimate repressive rule, propped up by Moscow’s patronage, at the expense of security of the Belarusian nation. The entangling of Belarus into Putin’s imperial war gambles is squarely against the will and core values of the Belarusian people, regardless of their political stance. Moreover, these actions violate the Belarusian Constitution, which clearly proclaims Belarus’s geopolitical neutrality and non-nuclear status.

We ask that the Canadian Parliament denounce Lukashenka as Putin’s puppet, call him out as the main risk to Belarus’s sovereignty, and demand from the Canadian Government to officially derecognize his illegitimate rule.

We also demand that Canada supports the call of Belarusian democratic leaders for the immediate withdrawal of the Russian troops from the Belarusian territory.

Finally, we express our unequivocal support for the people of Ukraine in face of the Russian aggression and ask to impose severe sanctions against Putin’s chauvinistic regime.
