Discovering Photogenic Toronto – Tommy Thompson Park in the Winter
Jan 18, 2013Estonian Life No. 3 2013
Tommy Thompson Park is famous among Toronto bird-watchers and nature lovers for the wide variety of species that can be found on this reclaimed land, located at the foot of Leslie Street, by Lake Ontario.
The park is commonly known as the Leslie Street spit. Although the peak season for nature is in the spring, with the park being on the migration route for over 200 species of birds, the winter also offers opportunities to see birds which remain in Toronto or migrate from the Arctic, such as the Long-tailed Ducks captured while diving. The photo gallery also captures the survival instincts of a gall, giving chase to a falcon!
The park also offers opportunities for walking, jogging, cross-country skiing and bicycle riding (winter weather permitting). As the park is a protected natural environment, pets and cars are not permitted. Portable washrooms are located in a few locations, but bring your own snacks and water. Because landfill operations occur during weekdays, the part is only open to the public on weekends and holidays. The accompanying photo gallery was created during the last week of December and the first weeks of January by Kerly Ilves, Kathy and Peeter Poldre.
