Campers showcased their skills by writing articles on their camp experiences, published online and in print. With summer camp preparations underway, Eesti Elu is getting ready to host a new and improved workshop.
Designed and hosted by Natalie Jenkins, the workshop aims to engage campers in journalism and our community newspaper, boost their creativity, and encourage them to practice critical thinking — in the news and elsewhere. Similar to last year, the workshop concludes with a final project. This year, students will have the creative freedom in choosing how to go about this. Whether it be a written article, a video interview, or a photo series, campers will conclude the workshop with a piece of journalistic media showcasing their favourite camp memories and experiences. With this also comes a nostalgia factor. As campers grow up, they can fondly look back at these projects, reminding them of the memories they created and shared with their friends.
Not only will this allow ample time for project completion, but it will also facilitate more content since the campers’ reporting will coincide with the exciting activities planned by the camp directors.
This year, the workshop will be divided into two parts. The first half introduces campers to journalism and its various forms. Campers will be provided with physical copies of Eesti Elu / Estonian Life, various photojournalism series, and video interviews as examples of what they can create.
The second portion of the workshop takes place outside. Campers will be encouraged to conduct interviews, observe, take notes, draw sketches, and take pictures of their surroundings as source material for their stories. These activities will take place throughout their time at camp. Not only will this allow ample time for project completion, but it will also facilitate more content since the campers’ reporting will coincide with the exciting activities planned by the camp directors.
The first workshop will take place at Jõekääru on Tuesday, July 2nd. Keep your eyes peeled for the campers’ final projects, which will be posted online and in print after the camps’ final sessions!
