Estonian Centre Project Update – “This will be our home” – Updates presented at Community Engagement Session

A warm and convivial crowd turned out on Feb. 9 to the International Estonian Centre (IEC) Community Engagement session held at the Estonian House café. A few future school users played quietly and happily as their parents participated.

Representatives from the project team were on hand at the productive and informative morning. Great interest was expressed by community members through a number of questions on how the new centre would function. Leading the presentation were David Kalm, Project Manager; Alar Kongats, Architect and Urve Tamberg, Executive Manager of the Steering Committee.

Steady, solid progress is being made on the key priorities that will make the new centre a reality and a second round of community consultations will take place in March. Feedback from the first round of consultations has already been incorporated into the design. The goal is to develop a financially sustainable facility that is as flexible as possible for as many people and organizations as possible.

Colouring contest winners!
The International Estonian Centre (IEC) invited the community to the grand opening of its Welcome Centre at the Estonian House at December’s Rahvajõulupuu, and to put their creative talents to work in a colouring contest! Those who wished to do so could have their artwork submitted to a jury. The jury was led by Liisa Soots, creative expression teacher at the Estonian Kindergarten, who confirmed that the decision-making was difficult because all submissions were delightful. The prize-winning works were in four age categories and they will be receiving a bookstore gift card: 5 and younger, Maali, Aila and Taniel; 5-10, Avani and Julius; Matthias for teenagers; and, Pilleriin for adults. This photo shows the work of Matthias. The IEC is grateful to all the participants and encourages everyone to visit the Welcome Centre, located at street level next to the Estonian House lobby during business hours.
