(Part one of the series starts here)
There were a number of problems from the beginning. Giuseppe’s secretary arranged for me to stay in a hotel in downtown Milan. It was very noisy, particulary at night. It turned out that part of the hotel was used as a brothel, which explained the nighttime activity. I was able to move to a small room in a student residence on campus. No one spoke English but at least it was quiet at night.
As time went on, there was no sign of payment and I was running out of money.
Giuseppe and I had agreed that I would give ten lectures. When Giuseppe put in a request for my travel and living expenses, the administration insisted that I give twenty lectures. Giuseppe said “Just make up ten phony lectures and we will find ten vacant rooms and the times you would have given these lectures. We will then resubmit your lecture schedule to the administration and you will get paid.”
