Alberta Estonian Heritage Society (AEHS) commemorates the 25th anniversary of Estonia’s regained independence

Linda Hall, located approximately 12 km south of Stettler, Alberta is a long time familiar venue for Alberta's Estonian community. The afternoon of August 20th it served as the gathering place for a summer social and a special program commemorating the 25th anniversary of Estonia's regained independence.

Alberta Estonian Heritage Society board member Rein Pääsuke happened to be in Estonia on August 20, 1991 and recounted his family's experiences during the pivotal days around that astounding declaration of independence. He used slides and clips from subsequent videos to enhance the sense of risk pungent in the air at that time.

Kelly Schuler was introduced as the new president of the AEHS. She talked about future plans for the organization requesting input from the 100 guests present. To that end, suggestion cards were distributed. The results have been tabulated by the board and some items will be implemented this fall, starting with a place in the new future website for recipes of the wonderful foods brought to the pot-luck buffet.

As usual, the tables were groaning with wonderful dishes: smoked hams, beef, fish, sausages, pickles, salads of many sorts, sauerkraut, sauerkraut soup, baked barley, barley salad, bread, buns, kringel, bubert, cakes and squares among the delicious selection. The table decorations were an exquisite combination of fresh and artificial flowers with a small Estonian flag in each delicate vase, tied with blue & white ribbon, all on blue tablecoverings. Thanks to Janice Pääsuke for organizing all the food and tables. And thanks to all who brought this wonderful festive fare.

Toomas Pääsuke, Dave Kiil and Eda McClung manned the tables where purchases could be made for AEHS memberships, copies of the latest AjaKaja magazine, the book and DVD about Alberta's Estonians, and wood decorations hand carved by the late Lembit Saar who had donated these items to the Society for this purpose.

ESTONIAN FILM
Kelly announced a major coup for the local Estonian community: a full-length Estonian murder mystery film, titled Ema / Mother, will be shown as part of the Calgary International Film Festival on Sunday Sept 25 and repeated on Thursday Sept 29. The leading lady, Rakvere Theater actress Tiina Mälberg, will be present at the first showing for a question & answer session after the Sunday evening showing.
