ALLAN SUTT WINS SECOND PRIZE IN ART COMPETITION

The works of twelve Montreal artists were selected for exhibition in the third annual "Brush Off" juried painting competition, which opened on September 12 at Avenue Art Gallery in Old Montreal.
The "Brush Off" features works from Montreal artists who are not exclusively affiliated with an agent or an art gallery.

The opening vernissage featured local media celebrities Mark Chaloub from CTV and Andrew Carter from CJAD. Among the jurors were well-known art critics Marina Cutler (owner of Avenue Art Gallery) and Dorota Kozinska (editor of Vie des Arts).

Allan Sutt's unique abstract was awarded second prize.

Sutt has been experimenting with techniques which he learned from well-known Estonian artist Endel Ruberg, in which water-based paint is applied onto different types of papers outdoors in sub-zero temperatures. If carefully done, remarkable features develop as the thin layer of paint begins to crystalize. Sutt adds small amounts of different solutions to the paint to induce minor changes in freezing point, enhancing some of the subtle features which develop at critical moments during the freezing process. The art work is photographed, and finally acrylic-mounted. The result is an intensely-coloured abstract display which evokes strong response in the viewer.

The “Brush Off” exhibition is on display throughout the month of September. All works sold will raise funds to help Art Based Projects for people living with Alzheimer's disease. Avenue Art Gallery is located at731 rue de la Commune in Old Montreal.
