AWARD WINNING ESTONIAN ARTIST MARKO MÄETAMM – The Hamilton Artists Inc. Residency Program at the Cotton Factory 2-25 November, 2017

Hamilton, ON. October 18, 2017 – The internationally renowned artist, Marko Mäetamm will be hosted by The Hamilton Artists Inc. as part of their upcoming international artist exchange program at the Cotton Factory. Marko Mäetamm is one of the most active and productive contemporary artists on the Estonian art scene. His creative career includes numerous international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennales of 2003 and 2007.

Mäetamm is a multimedia artist who works within the mediums of graphic art, painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and video elements. They frequently blend together into highly conceptual and deeply irreverent installations. He employs the themes of intimacy of family life and fierce dark humour as a means to reveal wider socio-political issues. “For me art means communication. I am interested in provoking dialogues and making people think outside their comfort zones and taboos. My work is about things I am concerned about in this world. It is a mirror of the present time - the only time that really exists.” says Mäetamm.

With the re-establishment of Estonian independence in 1989 came a political and social upheaval that broke free from old soviet restrictions and flourished under freedom of expression. Estonia’s thriving arts scene has resulted in a blossoming of museums, galleries and arts hubs to showcase the resulting cultural outpouring. Mäetamm will give a talk at the AGH Annex on Nov. 22 about the Estonian arts scene and his career.

The Hamilton Artists Inc. Residency Program at The Cotton Factory provides a valuable opportunity for artists from a wide range of disciplines and career levels to build their practice. Launching in 2018, an annual juried artist exchange will commence between Hamilton, Ontario and Tallinn, Estonia.
