Book Review: A Homicidal Manner

Thanks to an Estonian, Russian espionage intrigue arrives in small-town Ontario

I was packing up my wife’s display table at the Toronto-Estonian Rahvajõulupuu (Christmas market) last December. It was just happenstance that I noticed a small box of books tucked away at the foot of the table of Leena, the vendor next to me. The book’s colourful cover and provocative title, A Homicidal Manner caught my eye. The author, Peter Tinits, MD, was there and saw me perusing his latest novel. As Toronto Estos know, there is often just one or two degrees of separation/connection between us.

I mentioned to him that I had enjoyed reading his father’s (i.e. Arvi Kork) cops and robbers tales in Estonian in my teen years, particularly Tänava Kuningad and Sulid ja Vommid. Arvi also provided shooting instruction to cub scouts at the Eesti Maja shooting range back in the day. And my wife’s uncle had been in the Scarborough police division and knew the well-regarded officer and gun collector, Arvi Tinits.
