The second season of the interview series Likeminded is here, accessible through the support of the Tartu College Student Residence Scholarship (TCSRS), which is in turn made possible by the Academy for Lifelong Learning and Tartu College Student Residence.
In the first episode of the season, host Olga Loitsenko converses with Merike Remmel to discuss a remarkable thirty-seven-year career at the University of Toronto, including fifteen years served as the institution’s Director of Admissions. What began as a temporary summer job between undergraduate studies in physical education and graduate work in business administration turned into nearly four decades of shaping enrolment policy, evaluating international credentials, and guiding thousands of prospective students through post-secondary entry.

Raised in a traditional Estonian family in western Toronto, Remmel spoke only Estonian when she first entered elementary school. Though she recalls adjusting quickly, that early experience of navigating an unfamiliar language environment laid the foundation for an empathetic career. Decades later, as Director of Admissions, she drew on that background to understand the distinct cultural and financial pressures facing international applicants and children of immigrant families adjusting to Canadian university life.
