TORONTO – The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on September 22, 2022, that the President of the Estonian Central Council in Canada (CEKN) and recently acclaimed President of the Baltic Federation in Canada, Kairi Taul Hemingway, was placed on the Russian sanctions black list. Ms. Taul Hemingway joins Central and Eastern European Council President, Marcus Kolga in being banned from Russia by the Kremlin. Former EKN President Markus Hess was placed on the list earlier this year for his role as a board member of Tribute to Liberty.

During the seven months of Russia’s savage invasion of Ukraine, EKN and the Estonian community in Canada have stood side-by-side with the Ukrainian Canadian community and the broader Central and Eastern European community in Canada to oppose the war and advocate for Canadian government support for Ukraine and sanctions against the colonial invaders.

“I’m extremely proud to have our collective efforts recognized by this status,” said Ms. Taul Hemingway. “The Estonian Community in Canada will always stand by the people of Ukraine and our brothers and sisters in the Canadian Ukrainian community, and against Russia’s criminal atrocities committed in Ukraine”.

“The addition of Kairi Taul Hemingway demonstrates the disproportionately large impact EKN and our community -and the broader Baltic and CEE communities-  are having in this fight against Putin’s colonial war against Ukraine,” said EKN president emeritus, Marcus Kolga. “All Estonians in Canada, and around the world, can be proud of their advocacy and the support they continue to offer Ukraine in its darkest hours.”

Elected every four years, the Estonian Central Council in Canada represents the interests of all Estonians living in Canada.
