Estonian Scoutgroup 252, “Kalev”60.

On the occasion of Kalev's anniversary, Scout Master Enn Kiilaspea delivers his message of congratulations.

I salute everyone in our group on the 60th anniversary. This is a long time for any organization to survive, especially one that is founded by expatriates. What makes it rarer is that we are a Boy Scout organization where there is a turn-over in membership and leadership every couple of years. Even more so because the organization relies on the language , customs and traditions all different from the country that we live in.

We are good loyal Canadian citizens that also respect and embrace the same qualities of the land of our forefathers, Estonia.

Only a knowledgeable and mature society is able to do that. We have proven that it can be done. This is the “torch” that we have passed on, generation to generation.

Obviously being Scouts has played a significant part in our survival. Persistent training of young leaders has paid off, Keeping old leaders involved ensures that the very foundations that scouting is built on are not forgotten. I dare to say that this also has contributed to the longevity of Kalev. On the other hand if we do not find any more families that hold the Estonian past dear to their hearts – we will become a chapter in the history of Estonian expatriates in Canada. It is our utmost duty to prevent that from happening. Happy Anniversary Everyone!

Enn Kiilaspea,
Hon. Chm.
