Fränder Come Back to North America with Extra Force and Vigour

Folk music that emphasizes the storytelling and instrumentation of a specific country or region has to be the most viable and upwardly-growing of all styles at this present time. While English-language music centred around rock formats and diary-derived lyrics struggles to differentiate itself, we have become more aware than ever of what distinguishes us from country to country and seemingly crave those differences.

This is the first ingredient of what Fränder, the folk quintet of Swedish and Estonian origins, brought to Canadian audiences. Presented by Small World Music at Revival on College Street in Toronto, on Saturday January 17th, Fränder took us aboard for two sets of fantastical and historical songs (with a twenty-minute break in betwen), derived from the Nordic folk song canon, archives, and their albums FRÄNDER, FRÄNDER II, and their soon-to-be-released third album. Their 2018 concert at the old location of Hugh’s Room Live was in the wake of that first album and their 2023 show at DROM Taberna was leading up to the second. In all this time, a shift in their sound is noticeable. It’s ethereal, but with a rock seasoning.

This time, we didn’t see Estonian flautist and singer Säde Tatar, but her role was temporarily filled by Žofie Kašparová from Žofie & The Peacock Tree. On lead vocals and violin we saw Gabriella Josefsson. On percussion/drums was Andreas Berglund. And on double bass and låtmandola respectively were brothers Daniel and Gabbi Dluzewski.
