Sunday in Toronto at KESKfEST began on a warm, communal note as festivalgoers gathered at Tartu College for a sold-out Estonian pancake breakfast. Golden, thin pannkoogid were served up fresh alongside Canadian maple syrup, giving the community a chance to relax, fuel up, and connect over long tables after a long weekend of festivities and before the day’s commemorative and forward-looking programming got underway.
At noon, the atmosphere shifted to one of solemn remembrance with the Black Ribbon Day Commemoration, organized by the Estonian Central Council in Canada (ECC/EKN). The Estonian Central Council in Canada's Chair, Reet Marten Sehr, provided opening introductions, setting a reflective tone to honour victims of totalitarian regimes. The event featured official greetings from Marti Mätas, Ambassador-at-Large for the Estonian Diaspora, alongside insightful remarks from Prof. Andres Kasekamp and choral performances by Stockholmi Eesti Segakoor.
