On the evening of Saturday May 4th, members of the Estonian community in Toronto gathered at Tartu College for VEMU Estonian Museum Canada's 12th annual fundraising event.
The evening centred around the theme of “In Search of the Spirit of Tartu.”
“VEMU’s 12th annual fundraising event is dedicated to Tartu — we’re bringing the spirit of the European Capital of Culture to Toronto.”

Explaining this theme, VEMU said, “VEMU’s home in Toronto is Tartu College and so it’s very natural and fitting that we also celebrate this special year for Tartu… VEMU’s 12th annual fundraising event is dedicated to Tartu — we’re bringing the spirit of the European Capital of Culture to Toronto. We’re looking for answers to the question “what is the Spirit of Tartu,” and exploring whether reflections of it pop up in Toronto as well.”
Providing the keynote speech at the fundraiser was the Director of the University of Tartu Library, Krista Aru. Musician Jarek Kasar (AKA Chalice) entertained the crowd with his songs at the piano. Meanwhile, Chef Joel Ostrat led the gastronomical side of the event.
