Global Estonian Youth Step Forward for KESKUS Opening

Update # 282

This summer, KESKUS International Estonian Centre and Global Estonian Youth Network partnered to invite youth delegates (ages 18–35) to apply for volunteer roles supporting the preparation and execution of the KESKUS opening festivities, August 15–23.

The response was extraordinary: nearly 150 wonderful applications from Estonians and estophiles arrived from across the globe – from Seoul to Zurich, California to Saaremaa – demonstrating both the reach and vitality of the global Estonian community. Thirty-six of these exceptional candidates were interviewed by Kaisa Kasekamp (ÜENV lead) and Ellen Valter (KESKUS project lead).

Ultimately, eleven candidates were selected for ten roles. That extra place reflects a strong collaboration with Metsaülikool forest retreat, which follows immediately after the KESKUS opening festivities. The partnership allows youth delegates to extend their engagement seamlessly from the opening festivities into Metsaülikool, strengthening continuity and community-building.

We will be introducing these outstanding young people in upcoming posts. Their initiative, experience, and commitment to Estonian heritage signal a promising future – one where culture is not only preserved, but actively advanced by the next generation.

The KESKUS opening festivities are presented by Estonian Arts Centre, sign up for the KESKUS newsletter to read up on the festivities.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of Estonia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Integration Foundation, as well as Estonian Foundation of Canada and Estonian Central Council in Canada.
