Interview with West Coast Days in San Francisco and ESTO 2013 organizer, Mai-Liis Bartling

Why were you willing to take on this big responsibility?

The biggest reason is -- its an opportunity to give back to the Estonian community. Being Estonian-American has been a big part of my identity and has added so much to my life. So it is an honor to help organize the LEP-ESTO 2013. Organizing something of this scale is also an adventure and a chance to meet new people and learn new things. As the event gets close, no doubt we will be stressing, but we have a good team.

Do you have previous experience with organizing/attending LEPs or ESTO's?

I have to say that I have never organized an LEP or ESTO before. I have attended many LEP's in the past. I think I attended my first one at the age of 6. As a teenager I folk danced at LEP's, volunteered at the registration desk, and was just always interested to be part of these events. I have so many fond memories. I do have experience with other kinds of organizing that I hope will come in handy. (I was the Deputy Superintendent of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area when I retired in 2009, and am now involved with the San Francisco Keele Ring, Lastekool and Seda ja Teist uudiskiri.)

What event would you recommend?

It is hard to recommend a single event – all the organizers are working so hard to make their events a memorable experience. Because these will get less attention, I would recommend that people make time to visit the art exhibit, the traveling history exhibits, and the morning seminars. And then come to the rahvapidu on the last day to enjoy friends, food and drink, and sunshine.

What would you recommend people visit in San Francisco?

San Francisco is a beautiful city, and includes incredible natural features and open space. If you can, leave time to visit the Golden Gate Bridge, and look for the dolphins. Fort Point National Historic Site is under the south anchorage – if you stand on its roof you can feel the wind and ocean spray and enjoy the seabirds. It is a dramatic place.
