I’m told that this idea is not a new one and that it has been explored before. Perhaps, though, this could be the right time to revisit it, as the Canadian-Estonian diaspora continues to establish its own identity.
A few concepts came together in recent weeks to strike this creative spark. In the lead-up to KESKfEST celebrations in Toronto, preparations were in full swing including rehearsals of choirs, musicians, and folk dancers. A relative of mine has taken an interest in rahvatants (folk dancing) and like many local dancers, borrowed her outfit from a generous community member based on what they had available—and what fit.
I looked into where I could find her own set, including articles in Eesti Elu like “What It Takes to Acquire Your Own Rahvariided,” and asked about her style preferences. Her taste was largely based on what she liked visually rather than a connection to specific regional roots. After all, our family doesn’t come from just one area in Eesti, and we’re used to seeing people here wear whatever they can get their hands on.
