On February 9th, the Estonian Theatre For Young Audiences (Eesti Noorsooteater) premiered The Secret World of Puppets, a new production by director Katri Pekri, that invites audiences behind the scenes of puppet theatre.

Presented in an open, playful format, the show brings six iconic puppets from the collection of the Museum of Puppetry Arts back to life on stage, offering a lively exploration of puppetry as an art form.

Through dynamic and captivating play, the production answers questions such as: What is a theatre puppet? How can the inanimate be brought to life? How many actors does it take to animate a single puppet?

Director Katri Pekri explains that the idea for the production grew out of the puppetry museum’s event series Meetings with Actors and Puppets, where actors from the Estonian Theatre For Young Audiences introduce their work and puppet roles. “I had long been pondering the audience’s repeated wish to see the puppets from these meetings back on stage. For a while, I wasn’t sure how to make that happen, since these puppets come from productions no longer in the theatre’s active repertoire,” Pekri describes.

In The Secret World of Puppets, six different types of puppets from six decades of Estonian Theatre For Young Audiences will take part in the adventure. All the puppets featured in the production are replicas of those in the Museum’s collection.

The idea for the production was developed together with museum director Iti Niinemets and curator Gerli Mägi, who is also the set and costume designer for The Secret World of Puppets. The aim was to present the Museum’s collection on stage in a format that showcases all the main puppet types.

All the puppets featured in the production are replicas of those in the Museum’s collection. These replicas were crafted by puppet makers Annika Aedma, Evelin Vassar, and puppet mechanic Margus Tamme. The Secret World of Puppets, created in collaboration with the Museum of Puppetry Arts, is the second production at the Estonian Theatre For Young Audiences to originate from an in-house theatre laboratory concept.
