Then there’s the splitting up of duties so one person gathers pinecones (käbid) and small twigs while the other finds the larger firewood logs. You’ll learn how to build a campfire, starting from the bottom with light materials that burn quickly before adding the pinecones, small twigs, and finally some heavy logs. We’re also reminded that matches and pocketknives (taskunuga) should never be played with and must only be used with an adult present.
What’s the reward for all this hard work? Whittling roasting sticks to cook delicious sausages over the open flame, followed by a surprise dessert—marshmallows (vahukomm) that Rebane remembered to pack.
