Learning How to Make a Campfire with Tuta and Rebane

If you’re searching for fun, engaging ways to practice your Estonian listening skills while preparing for this summer adventures, one particular video from the popular Latvian-created children’s show Tuta asjad (originally titled Tutas lietas or Tuta’s Things) is a perfect watch for the whole family.

In this charming episode, titled “Tuta teeb lõket” (“Tuta Makes a Campfire”), the main character, Tuta, takes us along on a camping trip deep into the beautiful Estonian forest (Eesti metsad). Together with her clever puppet companion, Rebane (Fox), Tuta demonstrates the fundamental steps of building a safe and successful campfire. The video is a fantastic, clear educational tool for young viewers, introducing essential vocabulary and outdoor safety rules in clear, accessible Estonian.

Throughout their adventure, Tuta and Rebane teach us how to prepare for the elements. For example, how to keep matches (tikud) safe from unexpected rain by storing them securely inside a plastic bag within your backpack. Then there’s the splitting up of duties so one person gathers pinecones (käbid) and small twigs while the other finds the larger firewood logs. You’ll learn how to build a campfire, starting from the bottom with light materials that burn quickly before adding the pinecones, small twigs, and finally some heavy logs. We’re also reminded that matches and pocketknives (taskunuga) should never be played with and must only be used with an adult present.

What’s the reward for all this hard work? Whittling roasting sticks to cook delicious sausages over the open flame, followed by a surprise dessert—marshmallows (vahukomm) that Rebane remembered to pack.

If you’re planning your own real-world camping trip this season or just want to enjoy a cozy story from the Estonian woods, this episode is just for you.
