More Baltic Animation Excellence on the Festival Circuit with “Winter in March”

Continuing last year’s international acclaim for Flow (directed by Latvian filmmaker and animator Gints Zilbalodis), animation with a Baltic connection is once again getting noticed abroad.

The haunting puppet animation/documentary short Winter in March—directed and written by Natalia Mirzoyan—has been receiving critical praise and festival attention. Among the team behind the short film are several Estonians, including cinematographer Sander Põldsaar, animation artist Rebeka Kruus, colourist Andres Hallik, and poster designer Teele Strauss.

Originally titled Snow Is With Us, the film began its festival journey at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it was an official selection in La Cinéf, which spotlights international film schools. It took home the 3rd Prize from the jury. Most recently, it was awarded Best Student Film at the Palm Springs ShortFest 2025.
