PHOTOS – Pan Am Pole Vault Plus

On Tuesday July 21, Athletics (track and field) competition began at the Pan Am Athletics Centre at York University. The featured medal event was the men's pole vault. Interspersed with the pole vault competition were the women's javelin (at the far end of the field), women's 5000m, men's 100m heats , women's 400m hurdles and men's long jump. Photographers were allowed to walk inside the fence on a lane immediately beside the outside lane of the track. That area was only slightly wider than the running lane itself, so caution was needed with equipment and camera bags. Canadian Liz Gleadale started the competition on a positive note with a gold medal in javelin.

There are photos of her doing the victory lap with the Canadian flag. The pole vault competition became a two man contest between Canada's Shawnacy Barber and Argentina's German Chiaraviglio, both holders of their respective country's records. Canada won gold, Argentina silver. Barber then attempted a new Canadian and Pan Am record jump of 5.93m but was unsuccessful.

For those interested in the photographic aspects, several of the pole vault photos were taken during the practice time. This provided a good chance to get head-on shots of the vaulters approaching the bar. The practice time also produced some interesting images as well as allowing one to test out different camera settings. Most of the vault photos were taken at about 200mm of zoom. Different vantage points were tried to obtain a pleasing background.
