On Thursday July 9, synchronized swimming took centre stage at the University of Toronto's Pan Am Aquatic Centre in Scarborough.

Twelve pairs of competitors did 3-minute routines which featured mandatory technical aspects of the sport. Fifteen judges, on both sides of the pool, provided scoring.

A well-populated audience propelled the Canadian duo into first place. The event is full of colour and the routines are performed to variety of musical accompaniments, all characterized by being fast-paced and loud.

For those interested in the photographic aspects, the pool lighting was superb. With the help of Richard Lautens of the Star, we used a K4000 setting for White Balance. I still shot at an ISO of 2000, but shutter speeds were more typically around 1/1000 second. For the posed shots, both at the beginning of the routine (which is referred to as the deck work) and at the end of the routing (awaiting the judges' scores), I was able to lower the shutter speed to 1/500 seconds. The lens used today, because of the better light, was a Nikon 80-400 mm telephoto.
