Imagine this: you’re learning a new language (even Estonian!), and you’ve mastered the basics. You know common vocabulary, numbers, greetings, but you can’t seem to get into the conversational swing of things, especially with a native speaker. This is a common challenge. Taking the next step from textbook knowledge to real-life conversation may seem easy in theory, but can be quite difficult in practice.
One of the best ways to bridge this gap is to spend time around native speakers and immersing yourself in everyday language use. If you live in a place where Estonian is not spoken on a day-to-day basis, try the next best thing: watching Estonians speak online.
A great resource for this is the YouTube channel “Ask Estonian.” It features five videos varying in length, all built around the same concept. The host approaches Estonians in public spaces and asks them simple, conversational questions according to different themes. These natural exchanges help familiarize viewers with pronunciation, intonation, and other common mannerisms found in the Estonian language. For example, Episode 3, “What do you like doing in your free time?” asks people in Kadriorg park how they enjoy their free time during cold winter days.
