Press Release: Violation of Estonian Airspace

September 20, 2025

Toronto

On September 19, three Russian MIG-31 fighter jets violated Estonian airspace for 12 minutes.

This follows the recent incursion of Russian drones into fellow NATO allies Poland and Romania. This was not the first incursion nor was it accidental. Russia’s actions show a clear pattern of escalating disregard for territorial integrity and fundamental principles of international law.

Russia continues to test NATO unity and resolve. History teaches that Russia will only stop when it encounters pushback. Inaction only invites further Russian aggression. Increased pressure must be put on Putin to end his war against Ukraine, or the cost of deterring Russia will continue to rise.

Estonia has requested Article 4 consultations with NATO Allies. The Estonian Central Council in Canada (ECC) thanks the Canadian government and Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand for standing in support of Estonia and calling for Article 4 consultations, and “on Russia to end its unjustified and illegal war.” #Anita Anand

The Estonian Central Council strongly condemns Russia’s hostile actions and calls on all NATO allies to honour their commitment to defend every inch of NATO territory and take meaningful action to ensure that Russia will respect Estonia’s sovereignty and end its war on Ukraine.
