As the days get longer and the summer spirit kicks in, TLPA (Toronto Latvian Seniors’ Association) invites our Baltic neighbours to two special June events that are designed to entertain, inspire and bring us together.
Each event begins with an 11:50 a.m. lunch at the Latvian Canadian Cultural Centre, where Chef Ingo serves up delicious seasonal fare. Programming starts at 1:00 p.m. and is mostly in English, so everyone can join in the fun.
“These programs will be fun, stirring and interesting,” says TLPA president Ivars Mikelšteins. “Mark your calendars – you won’t want to miss them!”
June 5: Love songs for a sunny afternoon
We’re wrapping up our “First Thursday” series with a beautiful concert by pianist Pēteris Zariņš and soprano Leslie Higgins.
Their program blends romantic masterpieces by Chopin, Brahms and Clara Schumann with modern and neo-romantic gems by Gershwin, Ponce, Alvils Altmanis and Imants Zemzaris.
You’ll also hear fresh takes on love from French legend Serge Gainsbourg and Americana icon Steve Earle.
First Thursdays: In English. Chef Ingo’s lunch.
TLPA members: $25 | Guests: $30
Reserve your lunch by June 1: Maruta Freimuts – 416-233-9552 or mfreimuts@gmail.com
June 19: Letts Celebrate Jāņi!
Join us for our season finale: a joyful and tradition-rich celebration of Jāņi – Latvia’s beloved Midsummer festival.
Expect beer, homemade Jāņi cheese, wreath- and torch-making, and a deep dive into solstice folklore. We’ll sing and banter with playful “Līgo” songs – an age-old way to keep spirits and relationships strong.
This special gathering also welcomes our extended TLPA family – past performers, lecturers and supporters.
