The Honourable Jean Augustine speaks at The Canadian Ethnic Media Association

The Honourable Jean Augustine, Commissioner of Fairness in Ontario spoke at the Canadian Ethnic Media Association (CEMA). This is sort of a conundrum, fairness should be a given in any government operation not a separate commission but there it is.

Jean Augustine was a minor minister in a Liberal government, holding a suburban riding of Etobicoke-South, a part working class riding. She was a hard working former school principal who even supported the Estonian cause before 1991.

She was asked to step aside (she or he would never admit it) for Professor, Doctor Michael Ignatieff who was going to run eventually for the leader of the federal Liberal Party and then prime minister of Canada.

Ignatieff was not the right fit for the riding and even chose to live downtown to add to the snub. He lost the riding when he was leader of the Liberal Party and sank the party to the lowest number they had ever been.

Augustine was given the Commission of Fairness, which caused many to scratch their heads.

In Augustine's first discussion with the Ethnic press, she said she was fighting for the rights of African Canadians, that is she was discussing the rights of immigrants coming into Canada. Her department however has no teeth. She has no powers to enact any rules. Her department has only thirteen staff.

In a discussion the Hon. Eric Hoskins, a Provincial Liberal leadership candidate indicated that he would remake the Commissioner of Fairness “with teeth”.
