Urgent appeal from Ehatare

Dear members of the Estonian community,

Ehatare Retirement and Nursing Home is looking for your support in our interest to participate in a new Long-Term Care Homes Cultural Pilot Project (the Pilot Project) by sending letters of support to the Ministry of Long-Term Care (Ministry). This needs to be done prior to November 26th, 2024.

When Bill 7 was passed during the pandemic, it changed the prioritization requirements for placements to long-term care (LTC). This led to many unforeseen changes like people being moved to Homes they did not choose, and Ehatare losing any control it had for prioritizing suitable placements to the Nursing Home.

The Ministry is proposing to implement the Pilot Project to evaluate how changes to the LTC waitlist prioritization requirements can improve Ontarians' access to cultural, ethnic, religious and linguistically appropriate care. By participating in the pilot project, Ehatare and other Cultural Homes hope to improve the placement process by recognizing residents’ preferred language, beliefs, and cultural practices, which we see as vital for providing quality person-centered care.

The Estonian Relief Committee in Canada, which is the Board of Directors for Ehatare Retirement and Nursing Home, has provided a template letter of support that can be used. Feel free to adjust or write your own letter to support this initiative.
