A more historically significant gift to VEMU (Estonian Museum Abroad) is difficult to imagine. Chess pieces carved from wood in a war refugee camp in Germany some 80 years ago. The wood carver – famous Estonian artist Axel Roosman. The chess board built by Axel and his son Gösta, later in the UK. The gift being on display by the Estonian Chess Club for a year before its acquisition by VEMU. Jaak Järve, president of the Club and fulfilling the wishes of Axel’s other son Arne, also a recognized artist, presented the items to Piret Noorhani, curator of the museum. Photo: VEMU
