Want to win $150? Join Eesti Elu’s Youth Journalism Contest

Eesti Elu / Estonian Life Newspaper is excited to announce a new journalism contest (which includes a cash prize) designed to engage Estonian youth aged around 12 to 15 across Canada in a creative exploration of their heritage through journalism.

This fall, we are offering a one-class workshop, which will be available online or in-person. The activity is designed to introduce students to the basics of journalism, including story development, research, writing, photography, and video production. It uses a short presentation, mini-activities, and group questions to keep students engaged.

Thanks to the generous support from The Integration Foundation, we are delighted to offer four $150 prizes for the best submissions.

As an outcome of the activity, students will answer one of the following prompts through a short article (about one page), a photo series (about five to 10 photos), or a video interview (about 1-2 minutes long):

1. How do you connect to your Estonian heritage and culture?

2. Is it possible to connect to Estonian identity without knowing the language?

3. What is your family's experience immigrating to Canada from Estonia?

4. In what ways does connecting to heritage create challenges in people's lives?

5. What are the most uniquely Estonian activities or ideas, and how does your community celebrate them?

Thanks to the generous support from The Integration Foundation, we are delighted to offer four $150 prizes for the best submissions. We are working to provide these workshops in Estonian schools and communities in Toronto, Hamilton, Montréal, and Vancouver. By participating in the activity, students will not only have a chance to win, but also to discover new ways to conceptualize and connect with their Estonian heritage.

Keep an eye out for the winning submissions, which will be chosen and posted on our social media in December.

If you are interested in participating in the workshop or want to learn more, please send an email to natalie@eestielu.ca.
