For August 20

On August 20, 2023, Estonians celebrate the 32nd anniversary of Estonia's restoration of independence.

On this historic day, we reflect on the remarkable journey that has brought our nation to this point, and stand together and determined to remain unified in the face of growing foreign threats to its sovereignty.

Over the past three decades, Estonia has achieved unprecedented success and progress. From the depths of oppression and tyranny, Estonia has risen to become a shining example of democracy, innovation, and resilience. Our nation's accomplishments serve as a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Estonian people, who have worked tirelessly to build a society that values freedom, equality, and human rights – both inside Estonia and here in our global Estonian community.

The Estonian Central Council in Canada has successfully led the advocacy for the Global Estonian movement, which has been warmly embraced by a succession of Estonian governments to strengthen bonds among all Estonians around the world. Thanks to our community’s efforts, new programs and resources have been dedicated to this cause -to the benefit of Estonians living in Canada and the diaspora. These will soon include efforts to build a global civil defense network to help protect Estonia’s sovereignty in the future.

In the face of the menacing Russian threat, Estonia has boldly defended the principles of democracy and self-determination. Estonians understand the value of these ideals, having fought tirelessly for them during the struggle for independence. It is a duty we hold dear to our hearts to protect and promote these values not only within Estonia’s borders, but also on the international stage. Estonia’s commitment to democracy and freedom, remains unshaken, and shines as a beacon of hope for others who seek to cast off the chains of oppression and claim their rightful place in the community of free nations.

As we celebrate Estonia’s achievements, let us not forget the importance of standing shoulder to shoulder with our allies and friends. In a world fraught with challenges, Estonia has extended a strong and reliable hand of support to Ukraine, a nation courageously once again, forced to defend its sovereignty against Russia’s barbaric neo-colonial aggression. Estonia and our community in Canada remain committed to standing by Ukraine's side, offering not just words of solidarity, but concrete actions that demonstrate our commitment to the cause of freedom and self-determination.

In the face of Russia's unjust aggression, our community in Canada has demonstrated that the bonds of friendship with our Ukrainian friends are unbreakable. Estonian flags have been present at all Ukrainian rallies and protests in Canada and the Estonian-Canadian community has been recognized for its leadership in advocating for Canadian support of Ukraine’s fight against Russia.

As we celebrate Estonia’s 32nd anniversary of re-independence, let us rededicate ourselves to the ideals that have brought us this far. Let us continue to help build a community and nation where opportunity knows no bounds, where innovation thrives, and where the flame of democracy burns ever bright. Let us stand strong as a pillar of support for those who seek freedom, justice, and human dignity.

As we look to the future, let us remember that the journey is not yet complete. There are still challenges to overcome, but with the spirit and determination that have defined Estonia for the past 32 years, there is no doubt that we will continue to rise above, to achieve greatness, and to inspire the world with an unwavering commitment to democracy, independence, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship.

Happy 32nd anniversary, Estonia! May our nation’s flag forever represent a symbol of hope, courage, and the enduring spirit of a free and united democracy.
