Gallery: Külasimman/Village Party at Tartu College

On Sunday, May 25th, 2025, Tartu College in Toronto was the site of a free, all-ages block party that celebrated Estonian culture. Located at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Bloor Street West, the event, known as Külasimman or “Village Party,” marked the final day of the Estonian Music Week festival. It served as an accessible introduction to Nordic-Baltic culture, welcoming everyone from those with Estonian connections to individuals entirely unfamiliar with the country.

From 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the street was closed off to make space for various activities. And while a torrential downpour brought everyone inside to Tartu College's event space in the main hall, the show went on! Activities on offer included musical performances, dedicated children's programming, an art and crafts market, a mobile sauna, food vendors, and a DJ workshop. Prior to the rainstorm, the event also featured site tours of KESKUS just next door.

As part of Doors Open, with its theme of “play,” the Tartu College Event Space opened its doors, inviting the public to explore Estonian Museum Canada's record collection and attend a panel led by Erik Laar of Off Centre DJ School. Live performances were presented by artists including Tiiu Strutt (Land Heart Song), Hypnosis Negative, the folk dancers of TERR Kungla, and Blumarelo (winner of EMW's Rising Star competition).
